Provost Candidate, Dr. Tim Borchers, to Visit Campus on March 15

The first provost candidate, Dr. Tim Borchers, will visit campus on Wednesday, March 15. A campus presentation beginning at 9:45 a.m. is open to faculty, staff and students to attend.

Dr. Tim Borchers is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Peru State College, located in southeast Nebraska, where he collaborates with Deans, faculty, and staff to provide a personalized, engaging, and transformative educational experience for a diverse student population.

During his tenure as VPAA, the College achieved its highest first-year retention rate in the past 30 years and the College enrolled two of the largest first-year student classes in the past 30 years. The College has added new academic programs and partnerships to prepare students to meet the workforce needs of the State of Nebraska. Dr. Borchers provided leadership so that the College received continuing accreditation status with the Higher Learning Commission in 2022. He led efforts to create the Research and Creativity Expo and revise the Honors program. He also administers Study Abroad programs.

Dr. Borchers previously served as the Dean of the College of Arts, Media, and Communication at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) in Moorhead, MN. In this role, he fostered a partnership with Forum Communications to develop applied learning opportunities with the Fargo Forum newspaper.

Before serving as Dean, Dr. Borchers was the Founding Chair of the Communication Studies Department and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Social and Natural Sciences. As a faculty member, Dr. Borchers taught more than 20 courses in communication and rhetorical theory, coached the university’s speech team, and supported student research.

Dr. Borchers holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, a Master's degree in Communication from Wayne State University, and a Bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

He is the author of the book Persuasion in the Media Age, which is in its fourth edition and co-author of Rhetorical Theory: An Introduction, now in its second edition.
